Iris maintains the core characteristics of a sampler, but it’s in a category of its own compared to the existing options in the market. If you’re looking for extensive layer programming, abundant processing options, and diverse settings to articulate sounds on a keyboard, Iris might not be the ideal tool for that specific task. Here, you can access both waveform and sonogram representations, offering a unique realm of possibilities that traditional spectrogram or waveform visualizations can’t provide. This accurate depiction of time, frequency, intensity, and waveform of recorded sounds fundamentally transforms the way you interact with sound in a computer environment. The level of detail and precision in extracting, combining, modulating, controlling, and mutating sonic materials, all while visually understanding every aspect of the sound dimensions, is truly captivating.

Iris gives you the ability to adjust the color intensity of the spectrogram and the level of visualization between it and the waveform display, allowing you to hide either, similar to the functionality in RX. One feature I particularly appreciate is the zooming option, which lets you closely examine tight frequency or time ranges, enabling the extraction and control of specific spectral information. When combined with the various tools for selecting material in different ways, it opens up numerous possibilities for exploring field recordings. You can filter by frequency, amplitude, or freely select elements, or be pleasantly surprised by the magic selection tool, which automatically detects and precisely selects harmonic materials, resulting in wonderful selections and incredible tonal surprises.

It’s always fascinating to explore the depths of each sound captured in the field by manipulating the different tools available in the software, which are organized based on time, frequency, or both. Additionally, Iris offers a free drawing tool for selecting any desired element from the sonogram, along with a substantial brush for selecting material in various ways. Instead of just reading about it, witnessing these features in action is the best way to understand their capabilities. As previously mentioned, when you upload a sound into Iris, it automatically maps it to the keyboard, enabling instant pitch alteration. You can incorporate up to three additional sounds and play with them dynamically, defining articulation and envelope settings for each one. Each layer can be interconnected to share parameter movements, envelopes, and more. Furthermore, all layers can be mixed in various ways and processed globally with integrated effects.

The pitch system offers three different algorithms: Resample (default mode with speed and pitch alteration depending on each note played), Fixed (preserves original pitch and speed regardless of the note played), and Radius RT (a real-time pitch-shifting algorithm proprietary to iZotope capable of changing pitch without making changes over time. It requires more CPU but offers high quality).

While Iris may not offer the deep articulation options typically found in an advanced sampler, the features are sufficient, at least for me, including configurable velocity and aftertouch options. You’ll find various ways to link layers, as well as define how each one is played (loop, backwards, forward, one shot, etc.), and how many voices are allowed. Additionally, if you want to define specific key ranges, it’s possible to manually map sounds using a basic system available, as shown in the image below.

Initially, I had reservations about having only four layers to work with, but after spending time with the instrument, I’ve found it to be quite sufficient. Most of the time, I end up using just one or two layers and still manage to create a wide variety of sounds. The sonogram representation offers numerous possibilities to explore, and with the ability to alter pitch, modulate, filter, and apply effects, using Iris never gets boring. One of my favorite activities with the instrument is recording and jamming with it for hours. It’s incredible to hear the multitude of usable sounds for future creations, as well as the specific content that can be extracted for use in a typical layering structure within a DAW.

I consider Iris to be a highly expressive instrument. While the envelope system may seem a bit simple and the options for articulating sounds not overly advanced, it’s always a surprise to listen to the sounds and sequences generated by playing with a keyboard or experimenting with the effects and modulation options. Each feature on this instrument alone might be seen as a simple tool, but it’s the combination of these features that creates an engaging way to play with sounds. Think of Iris as a radar, where you have a defined map and can locate specific events, with the possibility in this case of combining them depending on how you perform on the keyboard. Trust me, I’ve spent many hours playing with it, even randomly, and its magic is always intriguing.

In addition to the many possibilities available through keyboard manipulation, Iris also allows for adjustments to the pitch, gain, and pan of each sound. It includes a straightforward yet effective LFO on each layer, with pitch, amplitude, and pan destinations, as well as filter destination on the master LFO. While the current selection of waveforms for modulation is sufficient, it may be beneficial to have more options available in future updates. The keyboard can also be utilized for modulation, utilizing velocity and aftertouch options to impact not only amplitude, but also LFO depth, filter cutoff, and resonance. This capability allows for the exploration of various combinations and modulation routings while playing. The result is a wide range of constantly changing and evolving sounds, maintaining an organic feel that is personally appreciated.

In addition to that, there is the master section, where you can globally control the mix of the layers and apply four different effects. These effects can be directly applied to the global sound or individually by sends. The effects include a distortion unit with several algorithms, a basic chorus, stereo delay, and a reverb, all of which are based on plug-ins released previously by the company, ensuring high quality. Finally, there are some global parameters such as the mentioned master LFO and a filter with modern and analog-modeled algorithms, which are very useful when shaping and structuring the final sounds generated by Iris.

Its true potential can only be grasped through experience, yet any sound designer can appreciate its capabilities just by understanding the features it offers. In my view, Iris establishes itself in a new category. It doesn’t seek to replace existing samplers or surpass what’s already available.
